Ok, let’s get this straight, it’s a difficult hike, but doable. Almost 1,400 feet elevation change. But the views are incredible and the snorkeling fantastic.
It’s still a beautiful and mostly untouched area. That’s the charm it brings. Like everyone else has said, bring water, wear sunscreen and make sure you’re in good health.
But a fantastic hike with incredible view followed by awesome snorkeling. And all for free. Enjoy!!
One of the most unique experiences I had here in Hawaii.
The 2 mile hike, one way, descends 1,386ft to the ocean, and it was moderate hike.
When you get to the bottom where the monument is, you are greeted by schools of bright yellow fish.
When I went there were only a few people that hiked. most arrive by tour boat, but those that Hike this trail get to experience the land in a more intimate way.
We saw goats, butterflies, and wonderful views as we hiked.
It was touch, but we made it!
10/10 will go again.
*Don't forget a snorkel! Snorkeling was incredible!*
How should I start? I saw dolphins for the first time in my life!!!!!!!
I started the hike which is 2miles down and 2miles back up. The way down is SO rocky and there are goats everywhere. Due limitations my hike down took forever, was so long and it was so hot, I was determined to ask a ride back up with some tourist boat once I got there.
There isn’t a safe design area to hop in the water you NEED to wear water shoes because it’s either super hot rocks or rocks full of moss which is slippery. I wasn’t so lucky getting in the water and I cut my foot and got a big scratch on my butt as I was trying to make my way in very slow. (Don’t try that, wear proper shoes)
I could see the fishes from outside of the water, it’s crystal clear and they are colorful. They were everywhere and didn’t mind getting close to the people swimming around.
I got my ride back up!!! I talked to this kind guy who not only allowed us to hop on their boat but swam back and forth to get our stuff.
While swimming to the boat I noticed a pack of dolphins swimming so close to everybody. I felt the luckiest person in the world. I got more than I asked for and I was amazed by the experience.
Kind guy I don’t remember your name but I have your face on my videos. Thank you for saving the day. For serving us pineapple, water and for the tour around I got to participate even though I was just a stranger on your boat.
I Uber myself to my car and it was so cheap (I tipped the boat guy too). My friend was so happy she got a dolphin tattoo that same day.
1000000% worthy
Next time I will: only bring a snack bar, water, sunscreen, water shoes and get a boat tour!!!! BOAT BOAT BOAT.. way easier and more convenient.
It was about 10 minutes before sunrise when we got to the trailhead and there was only one other car there. About two minutes after starting, we ran into a family of feral pigs that looked like a mom and her older piglets (almost full-sized). After we got past that, the hike down was filled with goats! We probably passed 100 goats in total of all ages.
The hike starts in the woods, but quickly switches to an open lava field with little to no shade. It was fine on the way down, but hot on the way up! We took so many goat pictures that it took us well over an hour to hike down. The bay itself is beautiful and peaceful early in the morning before your boats arrive. We were sitting, getting our snorkeling gear, looked to the side and saw a seal swim up less than 10 feet from us! It didn't even look our way, and then swam off.
The snorkeling here is amazing - totally worth the trip. There are beautiful fish everywhere you look! But the tour boats do fill the entire bay and kind of ruin the peaceful snorkeling vibes.
Bring lots of water and snacks for the trek back up. My husband and I hike a lot and were surprised at how many times we had to stop for breaks on the way up. I decided it was because we weren't used to snorkeling for an hour and a half in the middle of our hikes, but it could have also just been the sun or the very steady incline up.
The trail is very difficult, bring water and proper shoes,
Seem so many heading down the trail with no water and then in sandals, don’t.
Personally had o known how hard it was to get back up I wouldn’t have went down, having said that, the views are beautiful
An absolute must do of the island! The trekking is so pretty along all the way, starting in the green, overseeing the cliffs and the lowest part of the coast.
Make sure to bring water and something to cover the head - it is very hot! The majority of the path, between 10am and 5pm (winter) has no shadow. This is probably the hardest variable, the trekking itself is accessible if you prepare mentally to do 50-60’ of walk under the sun with a constant inclination.
Once arrived you will be at the best snorkeling spot! Infinite colorful fishes, in a unique panorama. We saw also a small shark and a turtle ????
This is everything I could’ve dreamed for in a hike!! About 2 miles down to a cove that has unreal snorkeling. Highly recommend bringing snorkel gear for you to explore - you’ll see so much wildlife!! The trek up was tougher, but if you’re moderately fit you’ll be alright. Saw lots of kids doing this hike as well. It was AWESOME
This is a strenuous hike so take plenty of water, sunscreen and a sun hat. It takes about an hour to get to the bottom of you don’t take any breaks. It is beautiful to see the yellow fish in the sea. Definitely wear hiking boots and allow for plenty of time for this hike, especially for the way back which is just uphill. There are many goats and some wild pigs even crossed the path. It’s not an easy hike but it’s worth it.
