Historic cafe in the main square with WW1 connections.
We visited here Sunday 3rd October 2021, on the third day of our trip back to the UK. This café is located on the attractive main square and is sandwiched between a couple of other cafés. The weather was just about good enough to sit outside and there were a number of tables here, but the slight chill in the air meant that It was actually quite busy inside.
Inside it had a slightly old school Belgian Café vibe, with the 2-3 staff (3 I think?) working tirelessly serving a mostly older clientele. The layout is of a long rectangular shape, their isn't really a bar as such with spirits and beer taps etc, it's table service and there is just a small area at the back where staff pass on food and drink to a colleague.
The beer choice was pretty decent, we wwre able to easily select a couple of beers we'd never had before which is pretty impressive. Service was quick and, staff attentive but as mentioned busy. The eyes of the café seemed glued to the TV screen and the Paris-Roubaix cycle race which I must say that even for someone like me who is non-plussed about the sport it was absolutely captivating. The conditions of the race were or at least had been very wet leading to very wet, muddy riders and lots of thrills and spills. We stayed for another and grew to really like this place, it had a warm, gentle vibe and certainly was an important meeting place for folk by the looks of things.
Can't fault this place. Service was super fast, product was great and the staff were friendly. The place was full, with guests sheltering from the sudden downpour of rain (us included!), but it was a very pleasant experience.
Very good kaaskroketten and garnaalkroketten. Superb beer list, almost too difficult to choose!
The service could have been a bit better, but maybe it was an off-day.
Modern and clean which is a little out of keeping with being in the centre of the old town. However great views of the square very tasty toastie and coffee. Better if you want a pit stop rather than a longer lounge experience
Excellent food. Enjoyed the spaghetti, carbonnade, jambonneau and the crepes.
