My hubby discovered this little jewel on a work related trip in 1988. He liked it so much that he brought me back a few years later. We live over 8 hours away from this restaurant. So, we find ourselves back in New England on another trip and we decided to make a detour so that we could revisit Carl's Oxford Diner again. It has been 8 years since our last visit and couldn't pass up this opportunity. There is a pink pig bus as you come into town advertising the dinner that is around the corner.
I ordered the steak tip special. It was absolute perfection! Cooked exactly the way I asked and the seasoning was fantastic! Eggs were over easy perfectly, toast was hot and buttery, potatoes were delish! And wow! It was a lot of food! A plate full of steak tips and a second plate for the 3 eggs and the pile of potatoes! I also had a hot tea, which was the standard Lipton tea bag and my favorite!
The hubby tried the Billy's biscuit special, which is gravy and biscuits. It was very tasty. We also ordered the corn beef hash to try and he said it was tasty, unusual and different. I didn't care for it, but i don't like corned beef...
We took home enough food for 3 more meals, and we were stuffed when we left. The portions are very generous.
This little restaurant is so adorable with all of the signage hanging on the walls, the slide open front door. There are bar stools in the front with a couple of little tables when you first walk in. You can sit there and watch them cook the food, or there are a few booths in the back addition.
No visit is complete without checking out the bathroom! It is actually outside the restaurant adjacent to the front door. It's a must see!
We will be returning in a few days on our way back home. We are so lucky because if this has been next week, which is spring break, they would have been closed. So, if you are ever in the area, this is a fun place to eat and rest on your journey.
Went to Carl's Oxford Diner with two other hungry diners ~ 8:00 am.
It's a nice old fashioned diner which I love. There is seating in the front as well as seating in the back.
For breakfast the following was ordered
Coffee ( of course)
Strawberry pancakes with side order of bacon
Shaved Steak and Cheese omelet with bacon and home fries
Scrambled eggs with bacon and home fries
The portions as you see in the pictures are huge. The quality of the food is great. Way too much to eat at one sitting and take home food containers were needed.
Great place, great breakfast and great service. I would highly recommend this place.
The food at Carl's is plentiful and delicious. I love the steak tips, the marinade on them is addictive! Carl's is small but the space is used well and everyone is friendly, which makes the close quarters fun. There is a counter with two tops across from it in the front of the diner. The back has a few booths and a couple tables. If you are looking for fine dining, this is not your place. If you're looking for a delicious meal with a guarantee of leftovers, Carl's diner is the place for you!
Just great! Stopped in somewhat randomly on the way across MA and I'm sure glad I did. They just take the cake for old-school diner vibe. The menu is extensive and entirely unhealthy. No salads or fruit plates here!
I ordered a pastrami sandwich and expected it to be generous, but it was huge!! Plus an order of home fries! I hear if you finish your plate you get a "dessert pancake", luckily I didn't or I would have exploded. Prices were very reasonable, and service was chatty and friendly. Lots of local color here, for sure.
Will be back for sure.
Fantastic place to stop if in the area! I first visited this place back in 1988 and it hasn't changed at all since then. I go here every single time I travel north. The experience is life-changing. It is like a ballet taking place in front of you while you eat. Everyone knows their job so well and they're doing it with such efficiency and grace. You have to experience this place to understand how wonderful it is. The $19.95 sirloin tip meal is my favorite. The portions are huge! Everything is so tasty and wonderful. Sometimes we detour 80 miles just to come to this place and eat. It is well worth the trip! Please give it a try. You will not regret it.
Amazing!!! It's been a while since we've been here and the owners have changed, not sure when but thank goodness they did. We haven't had a breakfast like this in years, and especially since COVID. Great people, and that great diner atmosphere. My breakfast I had to take home half (Egg and Kielbasa sandwich, the best Kielbasa ever) and my husband got the Pastrami omelet (now, the amount and quality of this pastrami should be on every sandwich you order anywhere, just absolutely amazing) he ate off this for three days no word of a lie. And the home fries were so delicious as well. Very tasty, and the price was excellent, especially for the quality and amount of food you receive. Glad we came here again. Can't wait to go back!!!
Fun, local, place, with AMPLE portions! When served my waffle, was told "good luck!" Had pecan Belgian waffle with a side of bacon. Scrumptious, but a lot. Two waffles and the side of bacon? A plateful. Seriously. Bring your appetite and be prepared for leftovers. Waffle cooked perfectly . Dining companion had a shaved steak omelet, also very satisfied.
Side note: check out the bathroom facilities, even if you don't have to use them. ????
Very friendly servers. The serving size is enormous. The home fries are just so so. It's a good place if you are really hungry ????
