This is the second time I bring my car there. The mechanic is very knowledgeable and nice. I think I will bring my bug there for as long as I have it.
These guys are old and tired. They don’t want to do a good job just a hack one. Didn’t even bother to quote price. They don’t have the right tools for the job. If you own a classic don’t waste your time. They don’t talk on phone if you bring it in they will bet on the fact that you don’t want to tow it elsewhere. If you need it to run any way possible they can probably help you.

Not many people work on air cooled VWs anymore. These guys are very knowledgeable and the prices are very reasonable. They are old school and prefer to work on oem engines.
This is a small shop and the owner, Joe, is my new hero. I have an '87 Westfalia Vanagon that was having horrible cold start problems after I had a rebuilt 2.1 installed. I travel full time in my van and I was terrified that one day it wouldn't start at a particularly inopportune moment. I lived with the issue for 4 months and took it to FIVE mechanics (all vanagon experts) and spent over $1000 trying to solve the problem. I was so frustrated I decided to sell the van but knew nobody would buy it with this problem. I was traveling through LA and someone recommended these guys. I brought my van over and Joe asked to look at the engine. Immediately he pointed near the air flow meter and said, 'that doesn't look right.' I left it there and the next day the problem was solved! Literally I almost cried! It was a $350 fix replacing the air flow meter.
Joe also mentioned that he thought the engine mount might be bent which was why I was hearing a banging (something I never even mentioned to him.) I bought it back a few days later for this issue and he called me to say that I needed an oil change as well (again, something I never mentioned to him but kept meaning to get around to.) Long story short (too late?) he did the oil change and removed the exhaust and brought it to a welder to have that fixed (it wasn't the more expensive fix of the bend engine mount) and returned my van to me the same day all for $140! Unbelievable!
I also got him to install a new power steering rack and that went just as well...inexpensive and super fast.
Now my van is finally running like new and I couldn't be more thankful. And I decided to keep it! (For now...)
True classic VW mechanics are getting real hard to find these days. Glad to have found them because my previous VW mechanic passed away :[
