2x Double Cheeseburger / 5⭐!
Bill's Hamburgers in Van Nuys has been open since 1965 on a quiet, industrial-leaning part of Oxnard where they serve American classics, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, breakfast items and chili. It's a cash-only business so make sure you bring some cash with you.
Bill's is one of those kinds of local spots where the 'ones in the know' will rave about and for good reason. They have a decent sized menu but I had heard many times over the years that their burgers are the way to go. While I was waiting for my order, I heard regulars ordering other items so it is safe to assume there is more to love than their hamburgers. I'd like to go back and try their breakfast sandwiches.
The burgers I had were delicious. There is an art in perfecting a menu and Bill's has achieved just such a perfection with his sixty years in business! The burgers were very well cooked, well seasoned, had nice crispy edges, and were extremely tasty.
The prices are still quite affordable. The service was quick and efficient for my visit. I would recommend you find street parking. The burger shack has a large parking lot next door but there are multiple signs warning Bill's guests from using the parking.
I also loved how cozy and personal the setting felt. While they don't have seating, they do have some bar counters outside. I took my burgers to my car. I loved the ramshackle shack look of their restaurant and the no-frills, effortlessly tasty food on their menu.
I recognize that Bill is set to retire or maybe he already has. But his legacy and his classic American menu will live on as long as there are people who care about quality food at good prices. They are worth the visit!
I don’t fully get this place. They only have burgers (no fries or shakes), the service is very slow (waited 10 minutes to order, 30 min for 1 burger and 1 soda). Cash only. And they’re located in a bank’s parking lot that you technically can’t park in (tho no one stopped me).
That said, the burgers are truly great. In-and-Out style arrangement, but the patties have much more flavor, closer to the steak-y texture of Shake Shack.
I do miss getting a side of fries tho, so don’t be scared to order two burgers or a triple if you’re hungry.
The words classic, vintage, old school and no frills come to mind when describing Bills Burgers!
Probably one of the most consistent burger stands in California. Having grace this small stand for a decade, I can say this is one of my favorite burger joints.
This family business starts with Bill, who is currently retired but is seen around the stand premise. I recently had a pleasant conversation with this legend. Bill told me his back story and how he has been grilling burgers at this location for 35 years. Can you imagine all that seasoning on that grill throughout the decades. Bill is now 97 and I was honored to listen to him while I waited for my order. His wife (sorry I don’t know her name) and her son Douglas have taken reigns and they haven’t missed a beat. The legacy continues!
Cash only, no phone call orders, there is a breakfast and lunch rush. No fries , only chips and cans of soda. May sell out before 3. No place to sit.
I absolutely love this place. My go to is the triple cheese with bacon and a side of lay chips. The patties are thin and seasoned well, with gooey American cheese, a nice soft bun with veggies and homemade sauce. The bacon is legit. You will get burger juice all over yourself as you bite into this heavenly sandwich.
I will keep coming here til they close. Thankful for Bill and his family. Great business to support.
Not only was the burger super good but on the day we were there we had the privilege to watch the old man flip burgers. That's right Bill is still flipping burgers after I don't know 60+ years.
On top of that as we were cleaning up our wrappers and throwing everything away they ran out of burgers and they were closer to the rest of the day.
It's important that you get to Bill burger because they will run out of food. This is an old burger stand at the man flipping the burgers is literally the guy who started this restaurant back in the day.
Super yummy is all I have to say!!
Small shop that makes quite possibly the best burgers around for traditionalists. Nicely portioned with a good bun-patty-condiment ratio. Also offers hot dogs and patty melts, which are also excellent. Customization seems to be limited to adding bacon to burgers, so if you don't like tomatoes, pickles, etc., prepare to pick them out yourself. Gets busy around lunchtime, so expect to wait upwards of half an hour and order only burgers if visiting close to noon (they have a small old-fashioned griddle with limited cooking space). They also seem to sell out early on a regular basis, so the earlier the better when visiting to avoid the wait or disappointment if they close early.
Bills Burgers is the place to go for an amazing burger. My boyfriend travels to California for work and always makes sure to stop at Bills. He calls it “the real life krusty krab” lol. Bill rarely grills these days but he’s around making sure the burgers are done right and let me tell you, they are!!! Something about this place makes you feel like home. Thank you Bill!
Burgers are really good and seasoned well. It's 6$ for a cheeseburger so the prices are very fair. I would come early to get your burger, they sold out around 1:30pm when I came. The burgers are pretty small so I would order 2 of them to fill you up. The owner Bill is also a WW2 Veteran and still works there!
It may not the prettiest in L.A., but it’s one of the tastiest thanks to the caramelizing effect of the patina on a 50+ year old burger griddle and the magic touch of 96 year Bill Elwell who’s been manning the helm of his eponymous stand since I was knee-high to a pickle barrel.
He only makes 6 at a time so you gotta beat the lunch crowd if you don’t want to wait 45 minutes to eat. However, waiting just makes you hungrier as the savory flavors of grilled meat and onions wafts out from the pick-up window. It reminds me of burger shacks at the Jersey shore in summer.
