Great place to access the "easier" hike to Old Rag. It's a very small lot (fits maybe 12-13 cars) and the last mile to the lot is a one-way road so it's probably not great on the weekend, especially during the summer/fall leaves, but on a week day, it was empty, easy to get to and only a 5.6 mi (steep but not rock scrambling) hike to the top. Only thing it could use is an outhouse, but otherwise, definitely recommend doing the hike from here.
1st time at Old Rag. I took the shortest route to the summit and a day pass was required and checked by the rangers against their list. I enjoyed the hike which was strenuous going up but much easier coming back down. Lots of people at the Summit around 10:30am when I got there as you can see in the photos. Took me an hour to get to the summit from the 1st ranger and then 45-50 minutes on the return trip as it's mostly downhill. I was alone so two hours round-trip with about 15 minutes at the summit was sufficient for me. The map mentions 5-6 hours for this route, I am not sure why (possibly due to the crowds before the day passes were institutued)instituted. I used a hiking stick which was helpful going up and down and relieved some strain on my knees.
Beautiful hike - Nov. 13, 2021.
5.6mile hike to and fro from the parking. Strenuous path but well worth the effort. Be prepared for sore body next day, kidding.
Limited parking spots. Plan ahead. Great idea to come early, ideal time would be 7-8am, weekdays or early morning weekends.
For almost half mile the road is very narrow which is only one car can go up or down. Have to be careful entering or exiting.
There is a self registration booth. If you do not have park pass then do not forget to take cash or check (or a pen if possible) to pay.
All the hike towards the summit is uphill. Be sure to dress accordingly, travel light (probably water and snacks/food).
The view is beautiful! Worth the hike!
The shorter hike to the old rag summit, nearly 5.25miles roundtrip by avoiding the rock scramble in the loop hike. Requires a day use pass for old rag. Can access the loop trail from this parking lot as well. From the berry hollow parking to the park ranger about 0.5miles, where the day use pass is checked. There is also a restroom at the old rag shelter along the trail.
Beautiful Autumn hike - Oct. 31, 2021. Strenuous path but well worth the effort. Avoided rock scrambles on Old Rag Circuit Hike. Very small parking area, plan ahead, weekdays or early morning weekends. Many postcard picture opportunities.
Great hiking spot--beautiful greenery, not too muggy. Saw deer, all kinds of birds, and even a snakey snake. Easy to medium hiking difficulty. Beautiful views start about 1 hour up the trail.
