Best WLM Reviews

We started with taquitos! Over the top. Server helped us decide on menu selections. Soup, plates and Margaritas with orchids really was simply comfort! Well done! Nice to change up it from chips and salsa and cheap drinks from other places. Just ordered the Flan! Best we’ve ever had. They know what their doing here.
Absolutely delicious food, awesome service, very impressive. Went there on a Friday night and it was surprisingly quiet but we had quick helpful service, Clara the bartender was awesome. The margaritas are GORGEOUS and delicious. Cute fun decor. The food is super authentic and unique, everything was really fresh and hot. Very surprised more people aren't checking this place out, I will definitely be back - get the taquitos, they come with guac and are SOOO good. Also, get the flan - my dad hates flan and he scarfed half the plate it's SO good. The caramel sauce is amazing.
Update! Previously rated this place very high. The food, service and the ownership changed. This went from a place I LOVED to a place I’ll probably not return to. The menu, once VIBRANT, UNIQUE and DELICIOUS. Is now boring, over priced and disappointing. The previous owners along with the old axolotl will be greatly missed.
I brought my whole family to this place only to leave embarrassed and disappointed.
I’ll leave my previous 5 star review here to pay respect to once great restaurant this once was…
I’d say this place is unique! In a great way.
Named after the Aztec god of fire and lightning, Xolotl, the axolotl has been an important symbol of Mexican culture for centuries.
The use of this symbol and the style of food is truly unique. I’ve tried a lot of Mexican food in my life. From LA to Mexico to my wife’s delicious cooking. This place not only has good Mexican food. It has unique flavor profiles that I can truly say I have not had anywhere else and it is delicious. If you’ve had Mexican food you know it’s similar every restaurant you go. If you want to experience something truly different, I welcome you to give this place a shot.
Happy eating!
We ate here on a Sunday afternoon. Started off with the empanadas. These were exceptional. The Masa wasn't dry, and the filling was generously stuffed with shrimp, which were well-seasoned and sauced. For the main, we had the steak with the shrimp on a slate. The steak was medium rare, nicely marinated, and a good portion for two. Also, I had a custom margarita with pineapple juice and fresh jalapeños with their well tequila. Again, exceptional.
The atmosphere was calm on a Sunday afternoon but with lots of vibrant colors on the walls, a cool bar that was well-stocked, plenty of tables, and authentic music playing in the background. The owners seemed to put a lot of their budget into the atmosphere. The one criticism I have is with the plates and silverware. It cheapened the whole experience to have very cheap cutlery and plastic plates that would be acceptable at $ and pushing it with most $$ Mexican restaurants, but totally not acceptable for a $$+ restaurant like Axolotl. Overall, I think this place is a more premium Mexican restaurant, but they have some way to go to dial in their customer base and the menu. My wife and I will eat here again, and it is a good place to bring visiting family.
Cool vibe inside the restaurant but the food was just too basic for me. The menu at the restaurant was not the menu posted on their website. I had the Enchilada Azteca plate and it was basically shredded chicken in a flour tortilla with cheese and a bland tomato soup tasting sauce on top with beans and rice. I was honestly pretty disappointed. The drinks were good though.
Garbage. Hot garbage. I ordered the enchiladas, tasted so bland that salt could not save it. Food was warm. Rice and beans that came with meal tasted like something out of a can. Waiter continuously forgot food and items. Music is so loud the waiter couldn’t hear me, got the order wrong. Place says traditional Mexican food, place tries too hard to make you feel like it’s Mexican food when really the menu is small, I do not feel like I’m in a warm Mexican home or the likes. Maybe I’m pampered by my Mexican mother in law whose food is a million times better. You’ll have better food at Yolanda’s or at Limon y Sal. Do not come here if you want to eat Mexican food. Place is…trash.
SO disappointed that the food and service aren't as awesome as the atmosphere!
Chips, salsa, guac are good. That was the only thing that tasted good :( and if it weren't for the terrible service, I'd consider coming back just for chips and salsa.
In our group of five, no one's food tasted good and everyone's good, including the soup, arrived tepid at best. The fajitas and chicken soup barely had any meat, the tostada salad was just lettuce, tomatoes, onions
Our waiter never looked up at us, didn't check on us, didn't ask if everything was okay (it wasn't), and when we were able to grab him as he zipped by, he didn't stop to let us finish asking for the things we needed (more chips, a wrong order, warm food)
As others have mentioned, it wasn't busy so it's not that he was juggling tables and orders.
So disappointed ???? the place looks SO cool, I really wanted this to be a great place.
Third time's the charm with Axolotl Restaurant after Culichi Town closed quicker than they took to open trying to do Mexican after Brendan's Pub closed. For my money Good, this is Good, Authentic Mexican food. These folks have put a lot of planning and money into the rebuilding of this restaurant property! Tonight's two page menu has an interesting variety: Spouse had Flautas - just right for a tender tongue. My first choice was two Crunchy Tacos adding some of the chip salsa - very good hot out of the kitchen. The Chile Relleno was good with rice & beans (staff said the beans were so smooth because the soaking process takes 2 days). Satisfying & we'll be back next time when the music is playing.
