Best WLM Reviews
A Wish or Two Ago French bakery recommendation came to me through my dental hygienist! We arrived later in the afternoon, and there was still a nice selection of pasteries available.
The building itself has quite a diverse history, having been around since the early 1940s. The interior has a very eclectic decorative style. It's like stepping into a European boutique with a bakery attached to it.
We tried several specialty croissants and biscottis. From the cold case, we had a petite Key Lime cake and a slice of French berry cake. Everything was terrific. We can't wait to go back and try some other offerings. Enjoy.
I have been going to "A Wish Or Two Ago" for many years now, both at the Rt 44 Location near Grand Island before the building was sold out from under them, and now at the new Eustis location that opened last July. I have lived in Paris, Manhattan, and San Francisco, towns all known for fabulous bakeries, and I have never found a better place to buy my croissants, baguettes, morning pastries, dessert pastries, even Crème Brule, various Quiches, and monumental special holiday desserts.
I used to make my own croissants and baguettes; having tasted those made by Phillipe, I no longer do. We entertain, including some formidable dinner parties, on a very regular basis, and Kathleen and Phillipe ALWAYS supply some aspect of the meals. For the special occasions, there are always the flavored croissant (chocolate; almond cream, etc) and Bavarian Cream Eclairs, but for HOLIDAYS there are things like a decadent peach glazed pie that Phillipe did this year for Thanksgiving (also in apple) and the masterpiece, his Bûche De Noël - the best I've ever had.
Funny story - there's a post here on Google Maps from a woman who complained about an "off-taste" in one of Phillipe's croissants her husband brought home; I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that he brought home ALMOND CREAM croissants, and expecting a plain butter croissant, her taste buds were shocked... This is why we tasted with our mouths, not our expectations! :) I've been tasting great food for over seventy years, and the work these two do at A Wish or Two Ago is of the highest caliber.
We have always wanted to go to this bakery since it opened from a thrift shop. We were always hesitant to go inside with the random items out front making it look like they are having a garage sale. Inside is the same thrift shop appeal with random “French” things. The case of pastries looked appealing but immediately was disappointed at the way some of these were made. Keep in mind my wife is a classical trained French pastry chef and I’m a home pastry chef. We ordered the chocolate croissant, blueberry scone and the raspberry lemon drop. Immediately the feel is off and the pastries are mushy. Taking a bite and I can tell the croissant is not made there and taste like something from Costco. I got the scone because it didn’t even look correct but I wanted to try it. The scone was battered and almost created like a 5 year old tries to help make a cake in the kitchen and then tried to bake it and was more of a fluffy cake like consistency. The lemon drop thing and croissant tasted as if it had preservatives and the custard tasted as if it came from a box. I’m sorry but this was as expected and is definitely a Eustis take on a French bakery.
I’m always trying to buy scratch-made bread when I can. Today was my first time stopping in a wish or two ago after a long time of seeing them and wanting to stop in. Service was super friendly. I got a loaf of God’s bread and it’s delicious. I’ll definitely be back to buy more. They had a huge selection of stuff there from cute vintage clothes and wares, olive oils, jams, preserves, pesto, baked desserts, and bread loaves. It smells amazing in there.
We have been looking at that “coming soon” sign for months, but finally, they’ve opened. This review is from day 3 of business.
Upon walking in, it honestly felt like they had been there for years. Whoever designed the inside, really put some back work into it. There are antiques and collectibles everywhere. They even have a rental space for parties.
When we got there, there was a line of about six people for the bakery. It went very fast, or I was very distracted by all the things around me anyway.
My purchase consisted of a Nutella pecan roll (it may have been walnuts, but I forgot to write this review the day I did it), a caramel crunch cookie, and a chocolate croissant.
The Croissant was gone before I could heat it up. It was absolutely perfect, even at room temperature. The cookie was so sweet and delicious. I did have half when I got home and half later that evening.
Now, that Nutella roll? At first, I took a bite at room temperature. And I was really not a fan of the texture. To resolve this, I cut it in half and microwaved for about 15 seconds. Ya’ll, that did the trick. It was fluffy and soft and warm and just perfect.
I will be coming back here.
NOTE: it is my understanding that the business will be closing at the end of August for two months while the owners visit France. They’ll be reopening at the end of October. So get it now, while you can.
I can't stop going to this French Bakery! Exception service. Friendly, kind, and sweet. The pastries are phenomenal. The espresso is delicious. Everything is YUMMY!
Update. July 28, 2023
Patiently waited for my dear friend Kathleen to open her Bakery at the new place.
I was overwhelmed by how stunning she decorated her new location. God is so good.
This is an authentic French ???????? bakery. It is stunning and the ambiance is delightful.
The bakery goods are as scrumptious as ever.
Y'all go visit.
Stopped in for breakfast on a Saturday.Ordered some pastries and some quiches. The pastries were good a little pricey but the quiches had very little flavor and filling.they were refrigerated and need to be heated in a little toaster oven which were still very cold in the middle. There were some people sitting next to us with the same issues..There was a long line and there was only one person behind the cases...I liked their old location and thigs were better there.. I hope they step up their game..
Kathleen and Philippe - A Wish or Two Ago.
I am from Michigan and in Florida for only a short time this trip. I was here about 2 years ago and stopped at their bakery on 44. I was surprised and pleased to hear that they had purchased the old church that I shopped at for leaded glass. I found a feeling of peace calm comfort sacred reverence in this building when I was there 2 years ago.i can't explain it effectively in words- it touched my soul.
So as I was driving by recently I had a gentle nudge that I needed to stop. It just so happened Kathleen and Phillippe were working outside landscaping. I gently yet persistently ...ok I begged them to let me take their picture in front of the church/bakery. And also heard their plan. This church is special and they will bake the bread of life. This is a mission and a calling to them guided by the Holy Spirit. To hear Kathleen talk about the guidance even through the challenges- there is more than just 4 walls to this bakery. And I have to agree it just feels special. At this time the bakery isn't open since there are a few more building details. I would enjoy hearing about other people's experiences and look forward to following A Wish or Two Ago.
