Tonight on Kevin's Diner
Shannon and I were in Fowler Indiana late this afternoon visiting our son John. After our visit it was time for dinner so we decided to dine in at the....
100 Mile Rib and Chop House.
THEIR STORY
The building was built in the early 1900’s and opened as a gas station. In the 1940’s, the Chesterton family began serving food and it evolved into a full service restaurant. We are located in the quaint town of Fowler off of US Hwy #52 in northwest Indiana.
Before I-65 was built, in the late 60’s, every car travelling between Chicago and Indianapolis had to go through the town of Fowler and right in front of the restaurant. Located 100 miles south of Chicago and 100 miles north of Indianapolis….it quickly acquired its name.
Over the past 20 years, proprietors John and Julie Hoskins have upgraded the restaurant, while at the same time, keeping the small town, friendly atmosphere intact. There is a fully stocked bar while also offering a separate family dining room. Great food fills the menu with daily lunch specials, dinner entrees, sandwiches and prime rib on weekend evenings. Of course, fresh-cut angus steaks, ribs and bone-in pork chops round out our large menu.
The exterior of the restaurant was more like a house than a restaurant. But as you enter the building through a small foyer it opened up into a large family dining room with a lounge on the other side of the wall of the family room. The owner John Hoskins tiny little office was to the left of the foyer and he was there doing some book work. I visited with him briefly and he told me some of the history of the restaurant. He was a very nice and friendly man.
We seated ourselves in the lounge and Elizabeth a polite waitress immediately provided us with menus and took our drink order.
After looking over the menu Shannon decided on the 12 oz Ribeye accompanied with a side salad and sweet potato with water to drink. I ordered from the sandwich menu and went with the Heater Burger and fries. The Heater is a good name for this burger! It is a 1/2 pound angus buger with a thin slice of spicy salami, pepper jack cheese, jalapeños and horseradish. It definitely lived up to it's name by providing me with a sinus clearing and spicy dining experience. I enjoyed every bite and definitely needed the french fries and two Arni Palmers to ease the heat.
Shannon said her steak was cooked perfectly and was a wonderful and tasty chunk of beef. She enjoyed her salad and said the sweet potato was great. She likes her sweet potato with just a small pat of butter. As for myself I won't even touch a sweet potato unless it is slathered in about a cup of butter and brown sugar with marshmallows melted over the top. I definitely don't want no run of the mill sweet potato!
She gave me a couple bites of her steak and it was definitely tasty with just a small amount of seasoning.
Overall we had a very good dining experience. The staff was great and John (the owner) walked by our table to make sure we were happy with our meal. Our total bill was $33 + tip. A very good value for Friday night dinner.
I bet this place was something back in the 50s and 60s! Think of all the people who have passed through traveling between the Windy and the Circle. That's trucker cb talk for Chicago and Indianapolis. ????
5 stars for the 100 Mile Rib and Chop House
Until next time Bon appetit
The 100 Mile House has severely declined in quality of food and in the quality of the service under the new management. If I could give zero stars I would.
We ate at the restaurant on Saturday evening Feb 11, 2023. The restaurant was far from busy yet the service was very slow. It took us 45 minutes to receive our food. When the salads came out the lettuce was brown. When we pointed it out to the waitress she replied “I know.”
The food came out very spread out for each member of the party. From the first person to the last person it was over ten minutes before everyone received their meal. My wife ordered the fried catfish which was raw in the center. Steaks that were supposed to be medium rare came out well done. Steamed vegetables were still ice cold in the center.
The new owner never once came out from behind the register to speak to us about the problems. When it came time to pay the bill the raw fish which had been sent back was still on the bill. We had to find the manager ourselves to complain about being charged for an inedible meal. The restaurant then could not run any of our credit/debit cards. After 15 min of the owner trying we finally had to ask for the cards back to pay by cash. Now a week later and we have charges from the restaurant for the meal that we paid in cash.
We loved it! Good food. Good prices. Friendly staff! Feel welcomed everytime..
Yesterday was my family’s first time at the restaurant. Food was great, can’t complain about that. Although a kids meal ONLY came with a hot dog. No fries, drink etc., $5 for a single hot dog & I also never received my side salad, but the rest of the food was great. One of our issues was that we were the ONLY table in the place and the service was slow. My husband’s entree and mine came out at the same time but we had to wait longer for our kids food. We were still okay with that, still planned on coming back because there were other things on the menu that we wanted to try. The server (owner/mangers wife) dropped our check when we were finished and disappeared well over 10 minutes. I eventually went up to the host stand to pay for the bill, still no server around. The owner/manager(?) took our payment. We take the kids to the car & I walk back inside because they wanted gum balls and now our server is just sitting at the host stand. Doesn’t even notice that we’ve already paid and left. She then runs out and follows me to my car questioning on why we didn’t pay because “she didn’t see us”. That right there alone will make us NEVER come back. If she was paying attention to the ONLY table she had, she would have known we paid AND tipped her 20%.
The food is always good, the staff is always friendly.Used to love this place but will NEVER go back while these new people own it.Price gouging at its finest!! I called in our order my husband picked it up.He was furious. They charged us 76 dollars for 2 average ribeyes and 2 regular sides of Cole slaw like you get at KFC. That was all we ordered!!
I realize prices have gone up but this is unexscubable!! Another person was charged 63 dollars for 3 hamburgers and fries.
I highly doubt it will stay open unless the bar keeps them going...
The new owners seem intent on running the place into the ground. What a shame, I used to love 100 mile.
I was the only person there at 1pm and the owner had me look at the menu on his phone. All the prices have gone way up. The tall beer I ordered was 2/3 foam and even that took 10 minutes. Paying the bill takes longer than anything else. I'm just done with this place
Amazing steaks and great service!! Def a local spot worth checking out!
I really like the place, decent food, and it was convenient. When the new owners jacked the prices up like a 5-star restaurant, I stopped going.
It could be a great place with the right people!
