We accidentally arrived in Mere one evening a week or so ago. Mere is a very small, quiet town, typical of Belgium: well kept and clean but almost nothing happens there. Noone is in the streets at night. When we were there at least there was the excuse of the European Cup on TV: everything (pubs and cafes) was closed but fortunately we stumbled upon t oud gemeentehuis. The host and his handful of customers were very friendly. Our host went out of his way to make a special gin and tonic for me and later treated us to the specialty of the house: pig cheeks and chips. It was really delicious. An unforgettable experience.
My friends and I were visiting Erpe-Mere in search for the Glazen Toren Brewery. We found the brewery, but it was closed. As we walked around town we stopped to visit an old church. When we came out I noticed this cafe across the street. So we stopped by for a beer.
The people that we met that day were awesome. Their hospitality was warming and we had a great time talking with the locals.
I would recommend if you travel to this town make this cafe a stop along your route.
