Update 10/28/2023:
Today is a Saturday and the peak time for fall foliage. So the parking area was already packed by 9:30am. But there's a another added parking area right next to this lot. Just drive right when you exit this lot and the entrance to another lot is just 50 yards on your right.
Be careful when you drive onto the skinny area, especially if you are driving a big car. The tree branches on one side definitely need to be cleared! And the surface conditions also need to be improved.
It can park approximately another 20 cars.
My past review:
This is a small parking lot for access to Buzzard Rock. The parking lot itself is kind of strange. You have to have a SUV to go to the steep “upper level”. So I would only give a 2-star to it.
However, once you hit the trail and climb up to the mountain top, the views are phenomenal! It’s definitely a 5 stars! I wanted to hike all the way thru the ridge but it was too hot for my family even in the mid-morning. So we only hiked point to point to Buzzard Rock and finished about 3.5miles. I think the steep rocks are also rock climbers’ dream!
Very fulfilling hike to be a little bit of a shorter drive than Shenandoah. It was certainly less crowded but offered 360 views of the Shenandoah area! You can do a shorter hike to Buzzard Rock from the trail parking area, or keep going for a longer version.
You’ll see the hiking signs closest to where you pull into the trail parking to get started on the route. You can drive on down the road to the creek that runs below the mountain to cool off as well.
All in all a nice alternative to a day in Shenandoah NP.
Lot can get full sometime, but it's worth a gamble driving out there. Nice hike.
Best short hike! Great path, great views!
Buzzard Rock is a great hike but GWNF needs to expand this parking area significantly because of it. I'll never understand why they have a HUGE parking lot at the Signal Knob trail which is an inferior hike and perpetually empty, and then have a tiny parking lot for a more popular hike thats perpetually full.
The hike is amazing. Parking lot is small and beat up. Be careful when the puddles are full. Those potholes are deep!
Challenging parking, very uneven and massive potholes. Ok for a four wheel drive.
Because of snow there was only room for about 4 vehicles. The trail us awesome. Can reach overlook in 2 miles then lots of different overlooks the next half mile!
