This place was a neat stop if you like pop-culture history. Opened in 1954, Burger Box is a decent fast food joint built into a former combination gas station/motel. Imagine travelling America's remote highways in the 1950s, where you have a gas station, motel and restaurant all in one convenient place. Today the gas station and motel are closed, but the original structures remain. It's a bit of a time machine that allows you to glimpse a bit of interstate travel life back in your grandparent's day.
Furthermore, any burger joint that's been around for 70 years is worth a visit because they must be doing something right. The food is very well done but not spectacular (it's fast food after all). They also have a unique take on french fries. Instead of the the traditional stick-cut fries, they cut them into thick potato chip-style slices.
The staff was very polite and helpful, and the bathrooms were clean (a rarity for a roadside stop!). I came on a weekday at lunchtime and it was moderately busy, so plan to wait 15 minutes or so for your order to be ready.
Hmm… what can I say? This was average to not really. The best thing was the fries were unique; thick cut slices for good potato taste. The burger was rather blah, no tomatoes or lettuce. Just meat American cheese and onion. Not much condiments either. Kinda like a White Castle burger but just a little bigger. The date shake was alright and the people were friendly. Don’t think I’d go back.
Not from the area so my rating won’t come from the nostalgia most people seem to have about this place. It’s Bad. The Burger was made for a 4 year old. The patty was well over cooked and topped with government cheese.
Same with the chicken sandwich. I asked for lettuce and tomato to be added and they said they don’t use tomatoes or lettuce at their restaurant. The lady then proceeded to say it’s delicious.. It was a giant chicken nugget in between buns with no nutritional value and a weird sauce.

Overall cool stop for “historic” purpose but the food ain’t all that. I would stop by for a shake but that’s maybe it.
It’s insane how many good reviews this place has. It definitely did fool me. so if you like decent food…. Drive an extra few miles
2 stars cause the lady was nice.
Stopped at this little place on the way back from Indio. Given the reviews, I was very interested to try this restaurant. After having tried it, I do not believe I will be going back. The servers are very nice and kind. However, you always need to have an ear out because they will call your name from the window to pick up your order, so you always have to listen.
As for the food… let’s begin with the burgers: The cheese burger was… okay at best. It felt like frozen re-grilled meat. Not much taste; the main taste is from the mustard sauce and the onions. Otherwise, the meat itself is derived of any taste.
As for the fries: These are not really french fries. These are fried potatoes, and not great fried potatoes at that. These were so sticky (as in all of them were stuck to each other like a moist stack of paper) and soggy. They were full of oil and did not taste good at all. It doesn’t really come in a box either, so I’m not sure why it’s called “Box of Fries”. I was expecting them to come in a box.
Overall, I don’t believe I will be going back. I’m only giving the 3 stars because of the nice people working there. Otherwise, it would be a 2. Maybe the nostalgia factor would have played into it if I had grown up here like others, however, with so many better options across the desert that are comparable in price, I will be choosing another place next time.
I found this place just by Googling it. Well, come to find out, my dad and my grandparents used to come here when passing through.
The food was so good. We loved EVERYTHING. Brought back some memories for my dad, but it was so worth the wait.

Maybe I'm just not their typical customer but the whole experience was very odd. Ordering is confusing, waiting process doesn't make sense, onions and pickles were overboard, burger and bun was good, French fries are actually potato thins. Non food related, parking is weird, building looks like it should be condemned, there were feral cats running around, guy digging into the trash for food. I was hoping for a good old school experience but this was just sad.
We have eaten here many times - we come specifically for the “fries” as nothing else on the menu is special. Unfortunately this time our fries were severely undercooked, soggy and greasy. They were absolutely disgusting, inedible. We ate on site so it was not a delivery/timing issue.
Working in the area during the week and was looking for a spot and this place came up as I was staying down the street. The reviews seemed great so I took a chance. Didn't seem real crowded, plenty of parking cush location. Ordered the pastrami with cheese for $7.49 and a medium punch for a total of $11.58. There's no outside speaker so you don't know when your order is ready, you kind of have to keep going up to the window. After a nice wait food was ready. Went back to my car to eat, it was still hot outside. Gotta say I was surprised by the size of the pastrami sandwich, pictured, rather small for the cost, it was indeed pretty good. The Burger Box is ok
