A roadside parking lot for about 20 cars with an access to Becker Hollow trail that ultimately leads to the Hunter mountain summit and a fire tower. This is the shortest and the steepest climb to Hunter mountain. I liked this trail down I wouldn't recommend this trail up. Whatever you might save on distance you will lose on time due to a very steep slope.
This is my second time came here. First time is in middle winter, the trail covered by heavy snow, then I gave up at the beginning. Now it’s early spring, temperature is much warmer. But I gave up on the halfway. At the first half of trail, the trail conditions is fine. When I was getting closer to the summit, the trail is full of icy and snow, and the trail condition is getting worse and worse. I didn’t prepare for it, so I turned back. The safety always comes first.
If you plan to go, snowshoes, crampons, and traction devices is highly recommended. Trail is marked blue, from parking lot to fire tower is around 2.2 miles.
I hiked the Becker Hollow Trail to the Hunter Mountain Fire Tower on the last day of 2021 with my 16 and 10 year old. Snow and ice as you ascend, microspikes and poles definitely needed. An enjoyable hike, it took us 5 hrs at a kid-friendly pace. We met some nice folks on the way. The summit was obscured with clouds and fog but it was still worth it.
This is the access spot for the shortest yet toughest climb to the hunter mtn fire tower.
I climbed it solo at an incredible pace despite the tough trail with no switchbacks. Met a woman that was dehydrated and close to passing out a half mile from the summit. I had enough water which I happily shared with her and then went on my way. Hope she recovered...
The fire tower offers an incredible view even if the trap door to the room on top is closed.
Popular place. Fits maybe 8 cars. It's off a well-maintained road and is plowed. There is a cool stone entry way where the trail starts. The trail is absolutely brutal; will shred your quads. 2000+ft elevation gain in 2 miles. It's next to a very pretty gorge most of the way. I'm told it's a good place to trail run, but it was very icy when I went to hike. Bring microspikes if you're going Jan-Mar. As with many catskill mountains, there was a lot of unfrozen water with thin ice hiding it, so be careful and bring extra socks.
It's a great place to hike, with clear routes and nice snow, but you'll need a pair of snowshoes and better stamina than hiking in spring and fall.
Went to the top of Hunter Mountain via the Becker Hallow trail. The incline was very steep, but the trail was not very technical. In mid-March, the last half mile was covered in snow and ice. I would not recommend going up without spikes or poles.
The views at the top of the mountain were great, but the rest of the trail wasn't too scenic. A reasonably fit person could hike up and back in about 3 hours.
This is the place to park for the steepest hike up Hunter Mountain! The entrance way is perfect in fall! The first time we went there was a foggy wet day so the parking lot was empty, it was full last time we went in early fall. However at the entrance, first time we went there, there were even amounts of red and yellow leaves on the trees and the hiking trail, it was perfect! However, the best part of the hike is when you get to about 3,600ft. The air changes, you're at the beginning of the timberline and the aroma of the trees is like nothing else besides Xmas times 1000! There is a sweet fire tower at the top of the mountain and is usually most days. They do tend to have park rangers at the cabin by the tower but were very friendly and even offered to watch our dog as we climbed the tower, but out pup made it 90% of the way and it's high and very windy, but the view is worth it!
